2. Is it an emergency?
It is a major deal for you and an emergency repair from your perspective, but in a general sense unless you can smell gas your boiler breakdown is not an official emergency. Yet you can get 24/7 emergency boiler repairs from us on: 020 7272 2259.
If you can smell gas, or notice a change in the pilot light flame colour or sooty marks around the boiler call 0800 111 999 immediately and turn the boiler off if you can.
3. Why isn’t my boiler working and is it dangerous?
Boilers are a lot safer than they used to be so don’t be alarmed if your boiler isn’t working. Most boiler breakdown repairs are caused by low boiler pressure, frozen pipes, faults related to thermostats or programming or clogged central heating systems.
However do be cautious and get your boiler inspected by a Gas Safe certified engineer straight away and never attempt any repairs yourself. You can call us at any time of the day, on any day of the week and we can advise you what to do next.
4. What to check first:
There are some quick things that you can check which may solve your problem. Use this quick checklist of common boiler breakdown problems to see if your boiler breakdown has an easy fix:
• Gas appliances: Are they working? If not, you could have a problem with your gas, call your gas supplier or the Gas Emergency Service immediately.
• Correct thermostat setting: Is your thermostat at the right temperature for your boiler to work? If your thermostat is currently too high or low, your boiler won’t work. See if it is set at lower than 21 degrees, if so turn it up, because it could be the reason that your boiler is not working.
• Low boiler pressure: If your boiler pressure is too low your boiler won’t work. Check the boiler pressure gauge, for most boilers if the dial is showing 1 or less, your boiler pressure is too low. Check your boiler manual first to see what level your boiler gauge should be showing and how to raise the pressure if your boiler pressure is too low.
• Fuse box: It not unusual to have a tripped switch. Check your fuse box to see if all of the switches are still in the same position.
• Power cut: If you have experienced a power cut recently you may need to reprogram your boiler according to the instructions in your boiler manual.
• Reset function: As with all other machines, resetting your boiler can sometimes get it back up and running. Read your boiler manual to see how your reset function works before pressing the reset button. If you have an older boiler you will need to read up on relighting the pilot light instead.
• Credit: It sounds simple, but it is easily done. If you have a prepay meter, double check that there is enough credit on your account.
If you’ve been through the checklist and your boiler is still not working, or you just want peace of mind, don’t worry.
