How long does a commercial boiler service take? All your questions answered
Workplaces are busy spaces and an interruption to your day can completely mess up your schedule so it’s useful to know how long a commercial boiler service will take before you book.
Commercial boiler servicing is more complex than it may seem because it’s a hazardous device. There are many statutory checks an operative needs to carry out to complete the service so it will take a certain amount of time.
Despite the obligatory examination, the whole exercise will only last around 60 – 90 minutes, unless you have a larger business which could take up to 120 minutes.
However, you don’t need to be present for the duration of the service and you’ll get a ful report at the end plus time to ask questions, if you choose a good commercial boiler company that cares about its customers, like us! How we differ
Here’s all you need to know about how long a commercial boiler service will take and what you can expect from servicing.
How long does a commercial boiler service last?
You can anticipate a commercial boiler service will last between an hour to two hours. Two hours would be a long service, most take 60 – 90 minutes. The service duration depends on
a number of factors such as:
- the age of the boiler,
- how dirty the boiler is (a build-up of dirt and grime can adversely affect the functioning of boiler parts so they will need to be cleaned during the service),
- whether there are already any problems with your boiler or some are found during
the service,
- if you have a large number of radiators across the property which need to be
checked,
- whether you also want the engineer to survey any other gas appliances at the same time.
Each of these elements will add more time to the length of the boiler service because the operative will need to add them onto the statutory checks they must already carry out to ensure your boiler is safe.
Don’t forget you must ensure the commercial boiler company you choose is a trusted, Gas Safe boiler company with registered Gas Safe engineers otherwise your service and supporting documents will not be compliant.
During the service the operative will check the boiler when it is both on and off because they need to examine the parts inside (with the boiler off) and outside the boiler as well as ho well the boiler is working.
Your boiler will be painstakingly examined, part by part, to ensure it is functioning properly and safely. Learn more about how a boiler is serviced in our guide to what boiler servicing involves.
How often does a commercial boiler need to be serviced?
The frequency with which a commercial boiler in London or the UK must be serviced is laid out in legislation. The 1998 Gas Safety Regulations make it a legal duty to have a commercial boiler serviced every year.
In fact, some companies with heavy boiler use service their boiler twice, sometimes even three times, a year.
Why service a boiler?
Although it can feel like an inconvenience, A boiler service exists to work in your favour. Boilers operate largely unnoticed with the many hazards they cause largely invisible. From the risk of fire, to explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning, it’s critical a business boiler is serviced regularly, at least once a year. These are not issues you can identify yourself and so it is a criminal offence not to have a commercial boiler serviced every year.
Not only would a faulty boiler put you in danger as the responsible member of staff, it also puts your staff and community at serious risk.
The Gas Safety Certificate
A Gas Safety Certificate serves as proof your boiler has been serviced each year. It is issued by your Gas Safe engineer and these are the only people who can award Gas Safety Certificates.
You’ll need to retain the certificate for compliance. The Gas Safety Certificate is given to you at the end of the service and remains valid for one year. Failure to have a valid Gas Safe Certificate for your premises could land you with a £6000 fine and a 6-month stint in prison.
More about Gas Safety Certificates
Think how serious an explosion or invisible leaking carbon monoxide would be. Carbon monoxide poisoning can be fatal. Regular exposure to carbon monoxide can affect major organ functioning, including the brain, cause sickness, headaches and more. A simple annual check will avoid all these dangers and more.
